TIPS & FAQ

HOW DO I GET INTO HEAVYWEIGHT THUNDER?

The first thing you should do is skim over the HWTMANUAL.DOC that comes with HeavyWeight Thunder, especially the first half, as it goes through the fundamentals of this game. After you've looked through the manual, you'll need a primer on combat in HWT.

Start off by viewing the fighting tutorial. This will get you acquainted with the basic principles of the Simu-Punch system. To do this, start the game up, and on the main menu, click on Training, and in the sub-menu, click on How to Play. This tutorial will go over the basics of the fighting mechanics in Heavy Weight Thunder. You should learn everything here, but the 4 most important things to learn are:

1.) The Left mouse button represents your left hand, and the right mouse button represents your right hand.

2.) To perform complex moves, you always press a mouse button and hold it down, and while the button is still held, you slide the mouse in a line or arc, then you release the mouse button.

3.) To pull off combos, you need to perform the combo moves very quickly. Don't worry about timing the moves, just perform them as quickly as you can.

4.) Block as much as possible. When you see a red glove icon below your character, the attack is coming high. Release all buttons to block this attack. When you see a green glove icon below your character, the attack is coming low. Press SPACE to block this attack.

Now, you are ready to begin your training. On the main menu, click on Exhibition. On this sub-menu, you'll see a list of fighters on the upper right, you can scroll up and down this list. Click on a  fighter and the window on the left will show this fighter's statistics. Below the stats menu, click on Player to assign this character to you, and click on CPU to assign a character to the opponent. On the lower left, you can cycle through the 6 arenas of the game. On the lower right, you can cycle through difficulty settings. Since you are starting out, Cycle down past easy, until you get to newbie. This difficulty setting is designed as more of a punching bag mode, so it is an excellent place to train.  Click on Fight to begin the Exhibition Match.

Take a moment to get acquainted with the basic left/right punching and blocking mechanics of HWT. Now, press the "~" button to bring up the moves list for your selected character. Remember that each character has many different moves and styles of play, so be sure this character is the one you'll be using for a while. You can also bring up the moves list outside of a fight, by going back to the main menu, click on Training, and click on Moves List.

Once in the list, Click on the buttons on the lower right to swap between attacks and combo lists. Each list has many pages of moves so keep pressing the down button to view them all. Each move is represented by an icon showing which button to press, and another icon showing how to slide the mouse. The dot represents no slide.

Start off with the basic moves and basic combos. Try using these in the Exhibition fight against the Newbie opponent.

Remember to watch your Stamina bar. If it gets to white, you're in trouble, pull back and try blocking for a while to regain Stamina. If this bar EVER gets to Red, you won't be able to block and you'll have a hard time attacking!

Remember to mix up your attacks between high and low. On harder difficulty settings, the A.I. will start blocking more if you just attack at one height. So, mix up your attacks to keep him guessing. Better yet, try attacking high for a while, then go for a big low to catch him off guard!

The basic moves to learn are:

1.) Basic Left and Right jabs

2.) Basic Left and Right body jabs

3.) Right/ Left and the Left/Right combo

4.) Right/Left and Left/Right body shots combo

5.) Body hooks

6.) Face hooks

7.) Body hook combo

8.) Face hook combo

Once you have these moves down, you're ready to start taking on tougher challenges. But don't worry if it is taking you a long time to learn these basic attacks, the learning curve even for these basic attacks can be over an hour.

Move on to the "Very Easy" setting. Like Newbie, this is more of a punching bag mode, except the opponent will put up more of a fight.

Now you are ready to begin the CAREER mode, the real meat and potatoes of Heavy Weight Thunder. Be sure to read the manual on how to play through Career.

FIGHTING FAQ

How do I get up Faster from a fall?

Getting up is automatic, and the health and stamina you regain is based on each fighter's stats.

I can't performing complex moves. My mouse slides aren't registering.

Many people are accustomed to holding their mouse at an angle. Look at you're mouse and make sure you are holding it as straight as you can. And be sure to pull off clean lines and arcs.

I can't perform combos.

The main thing is to perform the moves as quickly as you can, one after another.

The basic body jab combo is giving me a lot of trouble.

Try this tip. Begin sliding the mouse down, and Press the left mouse button. Continue sliding the mouse down, and release the left mouse button and press the right mouse button, but continue sliding the mouse down uninterrupted. Now, release the right mouse button and press the left mouse button again. Continue sliding the mouse down. Release the left mouse button and stop sliding the mouse. Do this quickly for a clean 1-2-3 body jab combo every time.

My Stamina bar runs out too quickly

You are being too active in the ring. Try punching less and blocking more. HWT is a game of strategic combat. Also, use as many combos as you can, as you get more bang per Stamina unit than with single attacks.

The opponent is blocking all of my attacks

Try switching attack height. If he's blocking a lot of high attacks, then start throwing some lows. Or if he's blocking lows, start throwing high attacks. It's actually a fairly effective tactic to get the opponent in a high or low block groove, then swicth attack heights on him.

CAREER FAQ

How do I get Started in Career Mode

First thing is to read the HWTManual.doc that came with the game. Then, Once you've gotten accustomed to the play mechanics of HWT, click on Career in the main menu, then click on Create. In this sub menu, choose the boxer you will use for Career, then pick a name for your career. Click on Create. This will take you back to the previous menu. Select the game you created, and click on GO.

You'll now be in the Career menu, which is a Calendar. Click on the Flashing Mail icon to go to your mailbox. Mail is sorted from the bottom up. These mails will welcome you to HWT, and will tell you how to set up a fight. When you go to challenge your first opponent, start at the top of the List. These guys are the easiest and have no big requirements.

When should I start buying stuff?

You probably want to hold off on making any purchases until it is necessary. In fact, try to build up a good cash pool before you even buy a house. Remember, you can challenge opponents you have already beaten.

Why can't I buy an item?

Make sure you have enough money.

Make sure you have enough house space. You may need to buy a bigger house to fit all your stuff.

How do I heal faster after a fight?

You can go to the shop and purchase toys to increase morale points. Every 50 morale points means you will heal 1 extra point every week. But toys are expensive and loose their luster after 20 to 30 weeks and you have to buy them again.

You can also go to Vegas and play with big money. Every 5,000 dollars that gets traded ( not just won) gives you 1 temporary point of morale. If you're short 20 points or so from another 50 morale points, This is an excellent way to top you off. Of course, there's always the chance that you'll loose some cash, but that's what Vegas is all about.

I'm barely making any money.

You can challenge any previous fighter you have defeated (as long as you still meet their requirements), just give them a few weeks after they fought you.

I don't have enough money to pay my bills.

Remember, you can take out loans at the loan shark if you need some quick cash. Also, you can also sell off some of your personal belongings to make ends meat.

A fighter won't accept my challenge

Make sure you meet all of their requirements. This includes a certain amount of Prestige, a certain amount or Respect, a certain amount of Popularity, and many times, they will want you to have certain expensive items or trophies.

My morale just shot back down.

This means one of your toys has lost its luster. You should get an e-mail about this. If you look at your toys, either in the inventory menu or the shop menu, you'll notice it is red, to signify it is no longer giving you a morale boost. Sell this item off and buy a new one.

My fighter seems to be getting worse the further I get in Career.

Make sure your Stamina is equal to or higher than Strength. Stamina is tied to Strength, and you want to keep these two balanced. For some of the big fighters, you might even want to have more Stamina than Strength.
